Zentec M410 is a programmable network logic controller, intended for building medium-complexity distributed or local control systems where protocol conversion is required. The device comes in a compact 4DIN enclosure (106×72×60 mm) for mounting on a 35 mm DIN rail and can be used as a gateway, data aggregator, or central controller in building and industrial automation systems.

The controller is based on an ESP32 processor running at 160 MHz and is equipped with 390 KB of user program memory, 64 KB of RAM, and 8 KB of non-volatile EEPROM memory. The device has a galvanically isolated Ethernet port, a built-in WiFi module (802.11 b/g/n/e/i), and an RS-485 port with electronic biasing and termination, supporting speeds up to 460800 bps.

The controller is shipped without pre-installed software. The operating logic is defined using the zWorkBench visual programming environment (developed by Zentec). The M410 supports Modbus RTU (master/slave), Modbus TCP (client/server), MQTT, BACnet, and SNMP v1/v2 protocols, enabling its use as a protocol gateway to integrate diverse equipment into a single system.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Versatile Network Controller: The M410 is designed for distributed systems requiring data collection from remote devices, protocol conversion, and data transmission to higher-level systems. The absence of built-in discrete I/O is offset by its powerful networking capabilities.

  • Two Independent Network Interfaces: The device features a galvanically isolated Ethernet port and a built-in WiFi adapter (supports Station/SoftAP/SoftAP+Station/P2P modes). This allows for communication link redundancy or using the controller as a local access point for configuration.

  • Flexible RS-485 Port with Electronic Adjustment: The RS-485 port lacks galvanic isolation but includes electronic biasing and an electronic terminator, simplifying bus connection. It can operate as a Modbus RTU master or slave. The baud rate can reach 460800 bps.

  • Modbus TCP to Modbus RTU Routing Function: When the RS-485 port is in master mode, the controller can act as a gateway, allowing Modbus TCP master devices to access Modbus RTU slave devices connected to the M410. This ensures even traffic distribution among multiple consumers.

  • Support for Modern Industrial Protocols: The controller supports Modbus RTU (master/slave), Modbus TCP (client/server, up to 8 master connections, 16 total connections), MQTT for cloud platforms, BACnet for building automation systems, and SNMP v1/v2 for simple network management protocol monitoring.

  • High Performance for a Compact Controller: The ESP32 processor at 160 MHz and 390 KB of user program memory enable complex data processing and control algorithms. The zWorkBench environment supports projects with up to 6000 function blocks.

  • Rugged Industrial Design: The controller has an IP20 protection rating and is designed for installation in enclosed control cabinets. The operating temperature range is +7 to +55 °C, with humidity tolerance of 10–90 % (non-condensing). Vibration resistance is 2G at 10 Hz.

  • Compact Enclosure and Easy Mounting: The 4DIN enclosure (106×72×60 mm) allows the controller to be mounted on a 35 mm DIN rail, saving valuable space inside control cabinets. The device weighs approximately 90 g.

Programming and Configuration

Programming the Zentec M410 controller is done using the zWorkBench development environment, Zentec's software product for visual programming using Function Block Diagram (FBD) language.

Key features of zWorkBench:

  • Visual FBD Programming: Connect ready-made function blocks (logic operations, timers, counters, PID controllers, Modbus, MQTT, SNMP processing blocks).

  • Communication Block Library: Built-in support for Modbus RTU master/slave, Modbus TCP client/server, MQTT publisher/subscriber, BACnet, SNMP.

  • Simulation and Debugging: Allows testing algorithms without connecting to the physical controller.

  • Program Upload: Via Ethernet, WiFi, or RS-485.

  • Remote Diagnostics and Firmware Updates: Supported in versions 1.22 and higher with fixes for stable Ethernet and MQTT operation.

The controller is shipped without pre-installed software, allowing it to be adapted to specific tasks during the design phase.

Applications

The Zentec M410 controller is widely used in various industries and building automation systems:

  • Protocol Conversion (Gateway): Connecting RS-485 devices (Modbus RTU) to Ethernet and WiFi networks (Modbus TCP, MQTT, BACnet). Modbus TCP to Modbus RTU routing is possible.

  • Building Automation Systems (BMS): Collecting data from temperature, pressure, and flow sensors via Modbus RTU and transmitting it to a dispatch system via BACnet or Modbus TCP.

  • Data Aggregation and IIoT: Transmitting data from industrial equipment to cloud platforms via MQTT, monitoring device status via SNMP.

  • Distributed Control Systems: Building networks with multiple controllers where the M410 acts as a central node collecting data from peripheral devices.

  • Energy Management: Integrating electricity meters with RS-485 interface into a resource monitoring and accounting system.

Why Choose the Zentec M410?

The Zentec M410 controller is a versatile network device for building distributed automation systems, combining compactness, a variety of interfaces, and programming flexibility.

  1. Versatile Network Interfaces: The presence of Ethernet, WiFi, and RS-485 allows the M410 to be used as a gateway between wired and wireless networks, as well as for integrating legacy RS-485 equipment into modern IIoT systems.

  2. Powerful Communication Capabilities: Support for Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, MQTT, BACnet, and SNMP makes the controller suitable for a wide range of tasks, from data collection to integration into building automation systems and industrial cloud platforms.

  3. Modbus Routing Function: The ability to function as a Modbus TCP to Modbus RTU gateway allows connecting many RS-485 devices to a single controller and providing access to them over the Ethernet network for multiple master devices simultaneously.

  4. Compact and Energy Efficient: Low weight (90 g), low power consumption (2.5 W), and DIN rail mounting allow the controller to be placed in densely packed control cabinets without additional cooling requirements.

  5. Ease of Programming: The zWorkBench visual programming environment allows design engineers to quickly create controller operating algorithms without in-depth knowledge of text-based programming languages.

Important Note: The Zentec M410 controller has no built-in discrete or analog inputs/outputs. Its primary purpose is network interaction, data collection via digital interfaces (RS-485, Ethernet, WiFi), and protocol conversion. To connect sensors and actuators, it is recommended to use the M410 together with Zentec I/O modules or other devices supporting Modbus RTU. The controller is an active product in the manufacturer's line, supported by the zWorkBench development environment, and regularly receives firmware updates. Installation and connection must be performed by qualified personnel following safety regulations. Always verify compatibility with the nameplate and official documentation for the specific device.
